Event description

This documentary heritage comprises records of an event of profound significance for deaf communities in many countries. The Second International Congress on Education of the Deaf (ICED), held in Milan, Italy in 1880, is considered a watershed event in the history of the deaf. Among its resolutions was that "oral methods should be preferred to the use of sign language for the education and guidance of the deaf." This resolution negatively impacted access to language and education for deaf people in many countries, led to the exclusion of deaf teachers from the classroom, and significantly devalued the value of sign language. The Milan Congress holds enduring symbolic significance in the history of the international deaf community.
