Character description
The Gramophone Discs and Papers of the EMI Archive Trust (1897–1914) is a collection unparalleled in its scale, scope, richness, and cultural depth. This collection is a significant record, reflecting the world itself in the world's first recorded sound, and is a prime example of both "culture as heard" and "culture as heard." The collection comprises approximately 116,000 virtually pristine recordings and over 100 million supporting paper assets, documenting the technological innovations that underpinned the birth and rapid expansion of the global sound industry.
The recordings encompass classical and popular repertoires, urban and rural traditions, and spoken language. While the majority of the material was recorded across Western and Central Europe, over 20,000 recordings document contemporary cultures from the Arab world, Asia, and Eastern Europe. These materials often describe the many cultures and groups that were poorly documented during the period before industrialization, oppression, and genocide.
